After a great week of sailing in Key West, several Charleston Area Sailors are returning home.

Standout Amy Ironmonger had a great on “Blu Moon,” finishing 2nd in Key West to Uka Uka, a third-time World Champion program.  Next was Jessica Koenig on “KO Sailing” with John Kolius.  They finished 8th, in the short but deep in talent field.  Guy Mossman, Ned Goss, Karen Sproul, and Carolina Davila on “Riot Act” pulled off a 25th overall.  We believe this is Guy’s highest finish at Key West.

Chris Hamilton will be happy to have his boat boat.  It finished 29th overall without him.

Mr. Clean from Sailing Anarchy caught the action at the windward mark of Race 8 in Key West on video. (click to see the video on YouTube, the key moment starts at 1:55 seconds into the video).  It appears that Guy Mossman (sailing number 245) on starboard tack gets fouled by sail number 575 when 575 tacks too close.  Guy has to round up.  He then gets ping ponged around and with the lost momentum it takes almost 4 minutes for him to recover from the foul.  Ouch!

The official blog Melges 24 blog says, USA-575 is “Zetiana,” owned by Alexis Michas from Connecticut.  Zetiana finished the race 21st place versus the 29th Riot Act scored.   If there was a foul, should Zetiana go to the Race Committee and resign from the race?  Add a comment and let us know what you think.

Rumor has it that Charleston-based J-120 “Emocean” blew up it’s hydraulic backstay on Tuesday. There was hydraulic fluid all over the cockpit.

We were hoping that Guy Mossman could grab a 17 and 17. Almost. He nailed the 17 in the first race and was in about 19th place on the last leg of race 2. Unfortunately, the boat spun out and they dropped several boat before picking up 2 just before the finish. They ended the race in 23rd. Together the two results move them up to 23rd overall.

Chris Hamilton’s boat, which is being chartered this week, rocketed up the charts to 30th place (out of 32). Maybe it’s time to put Joe Menis on the crew at Key West.

Jessica Koenig’s “KO Sailing” crew took a 3 and a 5 to move up to 7th overall. Amy Ironmonger on Blu Moon with Chris Rast continued to chug along in 2nd place overall.

At Key West Race Week, Jessica K. on Kolius’s boat had a 9 and 12 to drop to 8th place overall. Guy Mossman took at two 27s to drop to 26th overall. Hamilton’s boat, chartered by some Europeans, continued to wallow in last place. Chris assures me that his boat is very fast. It was flying at the North Americans in Annapolis.

Only Amy Ironmonger seems to be swimming upstream. With two 2nd place finishes, her “Blu Moon” crew is just 2 points out of 1st place. Chris Rast, the skipper, has a very impressive racing record. My money is on Rast to win the week with consistent top 5 finishes.

Guy’s crew on “Riot Act” pulled off a 17 and a 28 against very strong, but not long international competitors.  Only 32 Melges 24s are in Key West this year, reflecting the weak economy.  Usually there are 45 to 65 Melges 24s at Key West.

Chris Hamilton’s boat was chartered by the Swiss team “Team Jacuzzi / Blur.”  The Swiss might want to turn on the underwater jets.  So far, they’re sitting in 30th with a 32nd and 27th.

Jessica Koenig and Amy Ironmonger are also at Key West on Melges 24s. Jess is sailing with John Kolius from Texas.  They’re sitting pretty tonight in 4th with a 3rd and 7th.  Amy on Blu Moon with skipper Chris Rast is perched in 2nd with finishes of 4 and 2.
