With just over a month to go before Charleston week starts, 169 boats are entered to race. Melges 24s are the leading fleet with 37 boats. Top local talent and newcomers are scheduled to attend, including Southeastern Governor Steve Kopf and 2nd place finisher at St. Pete David O’Rielly.
Several other one-design fleets will also be making an impressive showing, including Viper 640s and Melges 20s.

In the only race on Sunday, Ned Goss and Seth Siegler on Hull 626 finished 3rd to move up to 8th overall (out of 45) in the regatta.
Guy Mossman on brand new Hull 786 finished 4th to move up to 4th overall.
David and Russ O’Reilly finished 6th to remain 2nd overall in the regatta. The O’Reilly’s performance is very impressive as they are competing in first big Melges 24 regatta since entering the fleet as owners this winter.
The entire Charleston fleet held their own against some of the biggest names in sailing, including Dave Ullman, Scott Nixon and Terry Hutchinson. Perpetual front runners Alan Field, Paul Hulsey and Argyle Campbell were also competing. 2008 Olympic 470 U.S. representative Stu McNay finished 10th, behind the top 3 Charleston boats.
See the full results here.
Steve Kopf and Chris Hamilton also participated in the regatta. No word yet on why they didn’t compete in the last race.

They waited all day for the breeze to fill. When it finally filled, they picked the right side of the course and rocketed to the front of a very talented fleet. O’Rielly beat World Champion Dave Ullman and America’s Cup Tacitician Terry Hutchinson and everyone else in the first and only race of the day. Crewing for David are Russ O’Rielly, John Putnam, Emily Pulos and Nick Turney.
Guy Mossman also had a stellar showing, finishing 4th in his brand new yacht! (Hull 786). Anyone know who’s crewing for Guy?
Four out of the 5 Charleston entries finished the race in the top 19 out of the 45 boats registered.

On the last day, Steve Kopf’s “Blur” took a 2nd in the first race followed by a 21st. They dropped a 31st from the first day to end the regatta with a total of 83 points. They were just 2 points out of 9th place.
Kopf’s finish is particularly impressive since he’s only been sailing the M24 for a couple years. They beat every boat in the regatta at least once, including 2007 World Champion Dave Ullman.
Sweet.
