I’m feeling pretty good about my predictions for Charleston Race Week. The boats I listed in the top 8 all finished in the top 12 (out of 30) in pretty much the order I predicted. John Hamilton doesn’t count since he wasn’t able to race. The surprises were:
Steve Kopf / Michael Miller finished in the top 5. I would have picked them for the top 10. All that practice and racing is paying off.
John Pollard a many time UK National Champ showed up to race Party Girl from Norway. If I’d known he was coming, I would have had him in the top 5. He finished 4th.
Peter Lane finished in front of Kristen Lane. I chatted briefly with Peter. He gave all the credit for their program to Kristen, saying it’s her competitive drive that got them out on the M24 circuit with awesome crew.
Everyone I talked to had a great Race Week. We can’t wait to see everyone back in Charleston next year.
If you want to have a one design fleet in the harbor, you need to get a bunch of your friends to register and race. Race Week is only going to have room for the strongest classes, like the Melges 24 and Viper 640, and the great to entries like the Melges 20.

J105 – 5 boats
J24 – 18 boats
J80 – 9 boats
Laser SB3 – 3 boats
Melges 20 – 6 boats
Melges 24 – 37 boats

Many other types of boats have at least 2 boats attending, including the Flying Tiger 10M, the Ultimate 20, Tripp 26, Olson 30, J-29 MH, and Archambault A40RC.

With just over a month to go before Charleston week starts, 169 boats are entered to race. Melges 24s are the leading fleet with 37 boats. Top local talent and newcomers are scheduled to attend, including Southeastern Governor Steve Kopf and 2nd place finisher at St. Pete David O’Rielly.
Several other one-design fleets will also be making an impressive showing, including Viper 640s and Melges 20s.

In the only race on Sunday, Ned Goss and Seth Siegler on Hull 626 finished 3rd to move up to 8th overall (out of 45) in the regatta.
Guy Mossman on brand new Hull 786 finished 4th to move up to 4th overall.
David and Russ O’Reilly finished 6th to remain 2nd overall in the regatta. The O’Reilly’s performance is very impressive as they are competing in first big Melges 24 regatta since entering the fleet as owners this winter.
The entire Charleston fleet held their own against some of the biggest names in sailing, including Dave Ullman, Scott Nixon and Terry Hutchinson. Perpetual front runners Alan Field, Paul Hulsey and Argyle Campbell were also competing. 2008 Olympic 470 U.S. representative Stu McNay finished 10th, behind the top 3 Charleston boats.
See the full results here.
Steve Kopf and Chris Hamilton also participated in the regatta. No word yet on why they didn’t compete in the last race.

Charleston Race Week is fast becoming the premiere one design regatta in the U.S., surpasing the NOOD regattas. This year Race Week already has 155 boats registered and is expecting more. Compare that to the 148 that are sailing at the St. Pete NOODs this weekend.
The most exciting and competitive one designs will all be here, including
34 Melges 24s
34 Viper 640s
6 brand new Melges 20s
4 Ultimate 20s
4 J-105s
And rounding out the one-designs are
16 J-24s
The race is on to see whether the Melges 24s, with the Worlds coming up in November, or Viper 640s, with very rapid growth in the Southeast, can attract more boats to Charleston Race Week. Rumor has it that the Viper class is literally running out of boats for all the people that want to race them at Race Week.
Watch the entries roll in at the Charleston Race Week current entries list.

The Melges 24 fleet wants to thank Henry McCray and the Charleston Quantum sail loft for an awesome fall racing series. Henry did a great job of organizing a fun and committed group of sailors. He made improvements each week.

Two or three of the Charleston, SC Melges 24s are practicing and racing on Wednesday, October 11. Henry McCray is graciously serving as Race Committee and on the water coach.
The M24 “Wireless” will be on the water with the crew Will Schaller (bow, wind, waves), Bill Park (jib, tactics), Ned Goss (spinnaker, boat speed) and Reggie Fairchild (holding the stick).
Steve Kopf’s “Blurr” will be racing after an afternoon of practice with Michael Miller. Miller may be jumping off the boat at 4 p.m. to head to work.
Both “Blur” and “Wireless” are gearing up for the National Championships in Jacksonville, FL in November.
We are hoping that Greg Harris will be racing “OSA.”
