A friend of mine asked me. Now I’m asking you. Who do you think is going to win the M24 Fleet during Charleston Race Week 2009?
I took a quick look at the scratch sheet and rattled off the following list…
- Scott Nixon
- Agryle Campbell (with Andy Burdick on board)
- Simon Strauss
- John Kolius
- David Dabney
- Kristen Lane
- John Hamilton
- David O’Rielly
Just as soon as I’d finished, I wanted to start making adjustments. Shouldn’t O’Rielly be higher? He just punched the lights out at the St. Pete NOODs. What about local ace Steve Kopf (with Michael Miller on board)? Isn’t Dabney, a two-time All American who took 2nd in the Corinthian Division at 2008 North Americans — his first regatta in an M24 — ready? He has a top-notch crew and has looked fast in local practice sessions.
Did anyone bring in gunslingers? Guy Mossman proved in St. Pete that he can put the boat in the right place with his new boat and new crew. (more…)

Melges 24s, Melges 20s, Viper 640s and SB3s will be racing in packs during Charleston Race Week. The action starts on Friday, but many teams are expected to arrive early for setup and practice.
It will be exciting to see so many sportboats in one place. Roughly 100 are expected to participate in the action. It will be interesting to see which class draws the most competitors. Melges 24 class President Travis Weisleder will be on hand. Andy Burdick from Melges Performance Boatworks will be in town for his first Charleston Race Week. He is expected to be supporting the new Melges 20, as well as the M24s. The Viper class has both boat designer Bryan Bennett and class President Justin Scott scheduled to attend.
Charleston is known for it’s great sailing conditions and tricky tides. Several out of town boats have called on local sailors such as Justin Walling to provide tactical advice.
We will be covering the on the water action here. Be sure to tune in all this week.

Charleston Melges 24 Fleet Captain, Chris Hamilton, says:
Hello All,
There are some important follow up items up for the Easter Regatta. Carolina Yacht Club has limited space and we are going to only register 15 total M24’s. If you are planning on attending, please call me directly to register, make arrangements for launching, trailer storage and transition into race week. All boats and trailers will be removed from CYC on Saturday the 11th (the Regatta is Frid/Sat no racing on Sunday). We will plan to sail in from racing on Saturday to Charleston Yacht Club, we should have more room and there will be a lot less traffic at the CHYC club. Please call for any questions.
Thank You
Chris Hamilton

Southeastern M24 Governor Steve Kopf says:
Given the explosive growth of the M24 in the southeast, the Carolina Yacht Club has graciously agreed to add our fleet to the famous Easter Regatta. This classic regatta has been typically limited to scows (E, MC, and M17), but now the M24’s will have a shot at the strong spring sea breezes that fill Charleston Harbor with white caps and wipe outs. The regatta is scheduled for Friday and Saturday of Easter weekend, so bring the family, race a little, and then you can still have Sunday festivities in one of the best cities in the county!
The NOR is online at:
https://carolinayachtclub.memberstatements.com/tour/tours.cfm?tourid=58729
You can register on the MC scow website at:
http://mcscow.org/fleet62/2009/
The only bad thing about this regatta is once you see how fast the E’s go with the new asymmetrical, you will want one too!
For those of you that have not attended this regatta in the past, the Carolina Yacht Club kindly requests that you remove your boat and trailer by Saturday evening so they can prepare for their Easter dinner on Sunday.

The entries continue to pile up. The sportboats in particular are storming the gates. Melges 24s and Vipers are leading the entries race. For a very new boat, the Melges 20 has 6 boats attending. There are half a dozen Ultimate 20s. Even the SB3 has 3 boats signed up. If you count J-80s as sportboats, there’s some of those, too.
Check out the list of entries.
Sign up for the regatta that is fast becoming one America’s premiere regattas.
